Shibori is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique that involves manipulating fabric through tying, folding, or stitching to create unique patterns. We will learn one clamping, stitching or wrapping technique in each session to create patterns on cotton and silk cloth. After we create our pattern, we will dip the fabric several times in the vats to get a deep dark blue. We will talk about the magic of indigo dyeing and fermentation and you will receive handouts for resources and recipes for many kinds of indigo vats to make at home. You will be able to browse Jazmin’s collection of textiles and dyeing books.
Sign up for several sessions to learn multiple techniques:
7/16 Friday: Fold & Clamp
7/17 Saturday: Stitch
7/18 Sunday: Wrap
Bring:
an apron/old shirt for dyeing in
well fitting rubber/nitrile gloves, 3 pairs per day
Workshop Fee: $85 per day, includes handouts, materials, 1 piece each cotton & silk fabric.
Materials Fee: Additional cloth prepared for dyeing will be available. Cost for dyeing additional pieces: $5 per piece. Cash or Venmo to be payed to the instructor during class.
