Description:
In this class, students will spend three days learning the techniques and craft behind greenwood post-and-rung joinery, a versatile and strong method for making furniture from hardwood. This project introduces the drawknife and spokeshave, an indispensable pair of tools for shaping wood by hand. We will practice various methods for making tight-fitting post-and-rung joints at compound angles, and assemble our frames with hide glue. On the third day, we learn the basics of seat weaving with Shaker tape, and you will take your new stool home as inspiration for further adventures in greenwood joinery.
This course is well-suited to beginners looking for an introduction to greenwood furniture making, and a great lead up to a full week-long commitment of building a chair. Build a Greenwood Ladderback Chair with Gabe August 23-29.
