Sweet Summer

Kotaro & Shuko Okubo will visit Woodspirit School in Ashland, WI in August.

Public Lecture & Demonstration with Craftsmen from Japan on August 8

Meet our special guests from Japan on August 8! Kotaro Okubo and his wife Shuko plus translator Masashi Kutsuwa will be visiting the Chequamegon Bay Area from Japan for a course on Utensil Carving with Nankin Kanna at Woodspirit School. Read this article through google translate to learn about Shuko and Kotaro’s artistic craft collaboration and watch the video at the end to see where they live and work. They will be talking about their work, demonstrating, and selling craft during a Public Lecture & Demonstration at our Craft Night on August 8 at 6:30pm. All Welcome. Donations at the door. Reception to follow.

Woodspirit School, 2nd Floor, 1400 3rd St W Ashland, WI 54806

We’ve had refreshing swims in Lake Superior, delicious local white fish for Fish Fry Fridays in Washburn, and noodled about on the bay in our sailboat—all the signs that summer here is in full swing. We are excited to show our guests from Japan all the goodness that is Chequamegon Bay.

We recently hosted three great classes: Willow Basketry with Scogin Zimmerman-Mayo, Spoon Carving Intensive with Jarrod Dahl, and Danish Cord Stool with Dawson Moore.

Next up is Shibori and Indigo Dyeing with Jazmin Hicks-Dahl and Utensil Carving with Nankin Kanna with Kotaro Okubo. There are 7 more classes left in the season including Pole Lathe Turning, Birch Bark Craft and Willow Basketry. We will be teaching on the West Coast in the Seattle, WA area in October. Register Here!

We get a lot of satisfaction watching people light up with the excitement of learning something new. Many thanks to the students, instructors and supporters of the school for participating in this work in progress.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Best,

Jazmin & Jarrod, Woodspirit School
