Spoon Carving Intensive Saturday & Sunday 9am-5pm

Description: Join spoon carving powerhouses Jarrod Dahl & Barn Carder for two-days of intense geeking out on wooden spoons. They will go deep into the subtleties of aesthetics and design, share insights into techniques they have cultivated over years of carving, and explore materials, tools, and decoration. They will discuss history, demonstrate skills, critique designs and help students take their work to the next level. In addition, they will share tips and advice gathered over the years on teaching spoon carving, to those who are interested. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy Barn’s sense of humor and Jarrod’s affinity for deep conversation.

ABOUT BARN THE SPOON

Barn Carder has been a woodwork obsessive for over 20 years. 13 years ago he decided spoons were his thing and dedicated his life to them. Each spoon is a joyous celebration of functional sculpture. In recent years Barn has spent more time sharing his passion through teaching at his school The Green Wood Guild. Barn co-created Spoonfest and recently published Spon a fantastic book on carving wooden spoons. He has a Spoon Shop on Hackney Rd. in London and runs Spoon Club an online subscription learning resource that he runs with his wonderful wife Cath. www.barnthespoon.com

ABOUT JARROD DAHL

Jarrod is a full-time craftsperson, teacher, and writer who has worked with wood professionally since 1996. He runs Woodspirit Handcraft with his wife Jazmin, where Jarrod designs, makes, and sells woodenware. He specializes in turning green wood into handled cups, bowls, plates, and boxes using foot-powered pole lathe and electric lathes, both Japanese and Western style. He is an accomplished spoon carver who makes a wide variety of knife finished cooking and eating utensils. Jarrod teaches handcraft nationally and internationally as well as trains apprentices. He has studied and researched woodenware in museum archives in the US, Sweden, UK, and Japan. His designs have been influenced by these traditional everyday objects. Jarrod has extensive knowledge of harvesting and processing natural materials, forging and using hand tools, and making a wide variety of craft from basketry to canoes. He takes a philosophical, historical and pragmatic approach to making, teaching, and advocating for handcraft. Jarrod writes a blog, and has written for Popular Woodworking and Mortise & Tenon Magazines. He made two DVDs, The Art of Spoon Carving (with Popular Woodworking) and One Tree about green woodworking recorded in Japan.
